Galeria Omar Alonso presents El Cerrito Series by Steven Rudin

Rudin created this series of  hand-cut paper collages in Mexico during his 7 week art residency in the Cerro Neighborhood of Puerto Vallarta.  Inspired by the theatrical set design of the film noir period, these collage vignettes invite us to consider the role of perspective in our daily lives. Combining monochrome and color photo images, Rudin’s work is reminiscent of a partially remembered movie seamlessly layered into a dream.

What Might Have Been Exhibition

Robert Berry Gallery

Robert Berry Gallery is pleased to announce What Might Have Been, curated by Hayley Ferber,  featuring new works by artists Mark Bouthilette, Gosha Karpowicz, Kelly Olshan, Steven Rudin, and Matthew Wood.

What Might Have Been brings together five artists whose works dissect and recreate instances of time. Using collage, painting, and mixed media, these artists create abstract imagery that explores endless possibilities through reflection, memory, and hopes for the future. Considering and questioning alternative outcomes, these works presuppose the chance of manifold realities.

Similar to collage, the process of recollection can lead one to imagine what might have been if the pieces were shifted one way or another. Steven Rudin composes cutouts from an archive of expressive paintings he created over time, each panel representing our constant evolution, using collage as a metaphor for memory and identity. His multi-layered compositions draw viewers into a dialogue about the dynamic nature of the mind recalling elements of the past, present, and future simultaneously.

“Through various mediums and styles, these artists ruminate over real and imagined thoughts, memories, and experiences. By altering instances of reality they investigate whether different outcomes are even possible or if what exists is the only way” Hayley Ferber, Curator

Brut Journal "Steven Rudin: Collage and the Multipart Self"

Edward Gomez, Founder of the Brut Journal, connects Rudin’s work with the history of collage, art brut, and psychoanalysis in his article “A Psychiatrist-Artist Explores and Revels in—The Technique as ‘Metaphor for Memory and Identity.’” A seasoned editor and writer, Gomez is a master of words, weaving metaphor and precise, detailed observations to underscore Rudin’s intention to illuminate the psychology of collage.

“Rudin’s collages, which he produces using photographic images clipped from magazines and product catalogs, bring to mind CinemaScope-wide vistas, theatrical scenes framed by prosceniums, and old neoclassical paintings whose complex compositions are packed with costumed figures in royal pageants, riders on horseback, or cute, chubby cherubs in celestial swarms. They’re dense, that is, overflowing with visual information.”
